EURIE 2016 – “Discovering New Horizons” – was the first of its kind in a newly established series of yearly expositions and conferences focusing on higher education in the Eurasian region. These series were created by EURAS, the union of Eurasian higher education institutions, a non-profit international association whose Board members include Rectors and Vice-Rectors of leading Turkish, Azeri, Romanian and Slovenian universities.

EURIE was developed as the “meeting point for higher education institutions and service providers” to discuss future trends in higher education (with a focus on the Eurasian region), exchange best practices and explore new networking and cooperation opportunities among Eurasian institutions and with institutions from across the globe.

The Abdullah Gül University was represented by its International Office, including the Head of the Office, Emeric Abrignani, Assis. Prof. Dr. E. Burak Arıkan, advisor to the Rector on Internationalization, Institutional Erasmus+ Coordinator Zeynep Çiftçibaşı Güç and International Marketing Responsible, Charlotte Justine. AGU held a table at the “Study in Turkey” Pavilion during these three days (which hosted 28 of Turkey’s top universities) and Dr. Arıkan also chaired the Panel entitled “Marketing and Recruitment in the Eurasian Region (Information on student profiles and different countries; innovative and successful recruitment strategies)”.

Additionally, two special panels were organized to address the Horizon 2020 EU Research and Innovation programme and giving Access to Education for Refugee Students.

The highlight of this event for the Abdullah Gül University was of course the opportunity to meet with fellow higher education institutions; and the International Team therefore met with a number of top universities from Azerbaijan, China, France, Germany, Hungary, Italy, Kazakhstan, Lebanon, the Netherlands, Portugal, Qatar, Romania and the US. The objective of these meetings was to discuss cooperation opportunities between our institutions including research collaborations and/or student and staff exchanges.

Our team is confident that participating in EURIE and meeting with other higher education institutions from around the globe will undoubtedly lead to future Memoranda of Understanding or Erasmus+ agreements for the benefit of our students and staff, our mutual internationalization and – in line with AGU’s Third Generation Approach of Societal Impact – in order to develop new, cutting-edge research projects and outcomes for the benefit of society.
